2023 predictions that will make it easier for you to grow your writing career
[skill-building] 10 predictions to help women copywriters simplify their next year
It's been a wild year of copywriting, and I think we're all feeling pretty overwhelmed.
But there are still a lot of good things happening.
Women copywriters are the ones creating more inclusive marketing campaigns that reach across gender, race, and class gaps.
Women copywriters lead the charge helping brands sell their products or services while also building trust and connection.
Women wanting to work from home have more opportunities than ever (it might take some time, but there’s still more opportunities.)
Businesses are seeking out people who deal with words every day.
If you are new to copywriting, hi!
If you want to write this year, do it. You don't need permission from anyone.
Now let’s talk through some ideas and habits to implement for 2023. Even if these predictions “don’t come true”, you can still use these ideas to prepare for an easier year of freelancing.
Less is more
Streamlined processes, written down or physically printed out to look at.
Seeing an idea through before starting another.
Using only one project management program for work.
Having ONE really good thing for sale (before moving on to the next.)
Companies will integrate freelancers more
There are some benefits to both sides of this relationship.
Some companies will be integrating freelancers and contract writers while also having an in-house team.
Never stop looking for work since freelance work doesn’t follow the same quarterly schedule that big companies do.
More success will come for copywriters who learn more than just the writing
Psychology.
Sociology.
Internet culture.
People gathering culture.
How to create a special, one-time offer.
Your niche.
There are some quick but challenging wins that let you stand out as not just another copywriter.
Ex: challenging yourself to write a LinkedIn headline that doesn’t just say “copywriter.”
Having solid metric goals for your clients/the company you work for will be important in a tough economy
There was a point right before the recession when metrics briefly took a backseat to the story you sold about yourself. And the metrics lived as an accessory.
Metrics will be taking a front seat in potentially number-crunching times. Try positioning yourself as the secondary story while the numbers do more of the talking.
Allow your message to evolve with the market. If you can sell, you can sell yourself in this market. It might take time, but you need to let your copywriting take you to the top as a potential job candidate or freelancer.
Things will pick up in the 2nd half of the year for corporate
Companies will be evaluating their needs and the market in Q1. The new year is also a busy time of year with campaigns that have already been planned out. Companies will be committed to finishing things before hiring again.
DO NOT STOP applying to jobs.
Freeing yourself from your desk more
The ability to Slack people, use Zoom on your phone, and write on Google Docs…
Get out of your office more. Make a destination goal when you go for a walk. Enjoy the life we said we wanted.
Create your own ladder
You don’t have to wait on anyone to switch jobs.
Become an email, ad, o landing page expert.
Work with coaches.
Work with women only.
YOU choose what your life looks like.
Pricing to investment talk in copy
A switch from focusing on a price to what the transformation is.
Some people may “drop out” before things get better
Some people might not be able to ride out the recession. For some, copywriting may take a backseat.
For others, freelance copywriting and finding clients is still better/safer than other jobs. (Safer for those who have a chronic illness, children, etc.)
The end of being told a specific money-making algorithm will work for you
“All you need is a class for $ X
A community for $ Y
Resources for $ Z
Then you’re making 6 figures, baby!”
Figuring out how to actually make the money you need to live is one thing.
Online gurus telling you to learn some universal money-making algorithm is another.
One last prediction: Copy Chicks will continue hosting a FREE community for women while offering affordable options to learn copywriting. There are enough places that want to charge you an arm and a leg.
Even worse, the founder isn’t anywhere to be found. Someone writes their copy for them pretending to be them, while their personal contact info is hidden, paywalled, or it’s just not possible to reach them to even say “hi.” Setting boundaries is one thing, running a “ghost” business where a team pretends to be you is another.
For 2023, I will always be here to chat, help, and say hi.
Cause that’s what Copy Chicks is about.
Yep, we’ve started alright. Great list,. I liked the part about some people dropping out. It happens, and it’s not failing or quitting. Sometimes things aren’t working or aren’t for you, it’s cool. Can I add a prediction- the guru guys will drop off and copywriting will go back to being much less obvious online, and personally, I really hope I’m right. ⭐️
